The new generation of the Ford Explorer is presented at the 2008 Detroit Motor Show. Its main technological innovations lie in a construction that unifies body and structure plus its new engines that reduce fuel consumption and emissions levels.
This new model named Ford Explorer America is presented as a step into the future for a long-standing product on the market. Ford takes advantage of this consolidated SUV to market its new engines with EcoBoosttechnology. These drivers stand out for offering higher performance and lower levels of polluting emissions.
Ford engineers emphasized weight reduction by choosing lightweight materials in both the engine and chassis, suspensions and other components present in the vehicle. This is how this new product is almost 70 kilograms lighter than the previous generation Explorer.
While the Ford Explorer was the best-selling SUV in the United States for nearly a decade, statistics show that its demand decreases. It is clear that the new trend for customers is to opt for more compact vehicles such as crossover.
Ford, through the next generation of Explorer, aims to anticipate the present by showing the public what the company believes will be the new standard for this type of product in the next decade.
Specifically, one example would be to abandon the traditional chassis body structure and replace it with a new, more efficient unified design. Another point to consider is the development of the new EcoBoostengines. Its characteristics respond to the rise in oil prices and changes in legislation that oblige automakers to reduce the consumption of their vehicles.
Ford abandons the large V6 and V8 engines to offer a new four cylinders of 2,000 cm3 and a V6 of 3,500 cm3 engine displacement. Both engines incorporate turbochargers and achieve fuel savings in the order of 30% and 20% compared to previous units. However, they do not relegate benefits. The 4-cylinder delivers a power of 275 hp and 380 Nm of torque, while the V6 reaches 340 horsepower.
In addition, the new aerodynamics of the body and various systems such as power steering work together to improve consumption by 5%.
Inside there are no major novelties or additions to the previous model of the brand. It can simply be said that the seats are mounted on rails that do not fix them directly to the floor. Thus, the central seat can be folded (electrically operated) for easy access to the rear rows.
The new Ford Explorer America Concept tries to anticipate what could be a new generation of “Sport Utility Vehicles”, lighter, equally rendent and less polluting.
