Swift was the first chassis manufacturer for Champ Cars of American origin. The first chassis developed was used by the Newman/Haas Racing team in 1997.
The designer responsible for this car was David Bruns. His work had a lot of emphasis on generating a lot of downward force to achieve stability in curves, although another fundamental aspect such as reduction of aerodynamic drag was neglected.
In the debut race of the chassis 007.i in 1997 Michael Andretti led him to victory. It was the first American chassis to win a Champ Car competition in 14 years. The subsequent results were disappointing, although Andretti would then take the car four times to the podium in second place.
For the 1998 season Swift developed the new chassis called 009.c. He again triumphed in the inaugural race and then the drivers Andretti and Fittipaldi pened with him the entire championship.
The car shown here in the photograph was used by the Argentine team John Della Penna with the American Richie Eran as a pilot.
