There are a lot of car fans who want to be designers. Many confuse car design with drawing. Below I will give guidance based on my design and drawing criteria.
Most people who contact each other through this site ask what to do or study to become car designers. While the concern is valid, in the exchange of messages I detect that few really know what it is essentially about designing. It is important to differentiate between drawing and design. There is always also the word styling, which is worth overtaking that is the most superficial... but in turn a salesman in a car.
Drawing is just that. There is no creation in the drawing . Drawing is the way to express an idea or a concept. The drawing itself has no content. Depending on our skills in handling materials and techniques, combined with our level of practical experience, the level of our drawings will appear. Let's not confuse it, it doesn't matter as cute or ugly, but as successful or not when it comes to achieving the goal: to communicate an idea.
In my opinion, a designer is not just a plastic surgeon, but a true connoisseur of the needs of the type of user defined for each product. The fact of designing does not imply the need to draw “pretty”. The actual designer will use the drawing only as a communication tool. The act of designing implies a responsibility. Often the best designers are not the best cartoonists.
It is important for everyone interested in this strange automobile world to find out what they really want. It is not about defining whether a designer or a cartoonist is better. Both are important, but their tasks are different... “must not be compared or compete”.
And finally comes the turn to talk about styling. Every company that sells products has marketing departments. In them, specialists are in charge of detecting what are the features of a product that manage to make a sale, that is, how does a product capture a customer? Basically, styling is the most superficial and useless aesthetic work technically present. Its benefit is not a technical factor, it is subjective. Its usefulness lies in a wise management of contemporary parameters of beauty that conquer consumers.
I think handling and keeping these criteria in mind will help to find out what their link is to car design or drawing. Then, when you want to train academically, keep in mind all of the above described and contract it with the analysis set out below.
Many educational institutes will hone their skills for drawing, but they will not bring much more to you. Others, with careers such as transport design, will try to make their baggage of knowledge deeper. They will aim to be placed in the design department of a company. And to work in a company, you will need to understand its entire operation. He will specialize only in design, but he will understand what requirements a marketing or engineering management will impart, and then adapt to group and interdepartmental work.
