Ken Tyrrell's first race car in F1 was the Tyrrell Ford 001. This car was actually a redesign of the Matra Ford MS80 with which Scottish driver Jackie Stewart became World Champion in 1969. Designer Derek Gardner then decided to modify that chassis.

For the 1971 season, three other chassis were built with different design criteria in some of its parts. The 002, 003 and 004 chassis competed successfully. Pilot Jackie Stewart won 6 Grand Prix and was awarded Driver Champion with 62 points and 29 lead over the second, Ronnie Peterson.

Tyrrell won the Constructors' Cup in his second season in the most competitive category in the world and pilot Jackie Stewart won his second Formula 1 championship.

In 1972 designer Derek Gardner developed the new 005 chassis powered by a Ford Cosworth DFV V8 engine. This redesign of the Tyrrell car was heavily influenced by the innovative lines of the Colin Chapman Lotus. The car debuted at the French Grand Prix and one of the drivers was local François Cevert.

As the Lotus was configured, the Tyrrell Ford 005 had side radiators and an upward profile towards the rear. The Tyrrell was a good car, but Lotus's development was unbeatable.

In 1972 the champion pilot was Emerson Fittipaldi aboard a Lotus 72. Jackie Stewart's 4 triumphs were not enough and finished in second place in the championship.

During the qualification for the 1973 Kyalami Grand Prix Jackie Stewart he suffered an accident and his Tyrrell 005 became useless. The Scottish pilot used François Cevert's car which was almost the same, although later and designated 006. Stewart won this competition in South Africa and during the rest of the 1973 season he used this same but optimized car.

The redesigned Tyrrell 006/2 was very competitive. Jackie Stewart won 5 Grand Prix, in South Africa, Belgium, Monaco, Holland and Germany. His role was somewhat lonely, as his teammate was not up to his level and Stewart faced the Lotus cars of Fittipaldi and Peterson.

While Lotus won the Constructors' Cup in 1973, Jackie Stewart showed that his talent made a difference important enough to win the driver's title. With his third F1 championship, Stewart retired from motorsport after giving Tyrrell his best moments in the top category of motorsport.
