Ford presented the shocking Interceptor Concept at the 2007 Detroit Motor Show. This is a large sedan with a design inspired by the great Ford four-door cars of the 1960s, when those “familiar” cars used huge high-performance V8 engines...
While the proportions and design style are basically traditional, Ford sought to rescue some typical elements in its cars of yesteryear and project them into the future. This is how we once again have evidence that the retro trend is what captivates the American public most.
As Chrysler overtook and conquered the market with the 300C HEMI, Ford is reacting and trying to present a vehicle that can rival in the same market segment.
Ford executives felt that “the momentum driven by the Mustang must be maintained.” Although kinship is not expressed in the exterior design, under the hood of the Interceptor Concept hides a V8 engine derived from the one used in the Mustang FR500C Grand Am champion. This 5,000 cm3 displacement drive develops a power of 400 hp and connects to a six-speed manual transmission.
The head of the design of this concept car, Peter Horbury, explained that “this concept celebrates the best of American muscular cars. And if it looks like a family car, it's because it must be. This is because we moved the design language of last year's Pick-up F250 to this car.
Inside, the black leather seats recall the look of the “muscle cars” of the 1960s. Each seat is equipped with four-point seat belts developed by Ford. Another vital element of interior equipment is the oversized iDrive system, perhaps the largest in a current car.
