The Ferrari 288 GTO was presented at the 1984 Geneva Motor Show. His appearance aimed to achieve the FISA homologation in order to compete in the famous Group B of the World Rally. Hence the name GTO, which means “Gran Turismo Omologato”.
But the reality is that the 288 GTO never had the opportunity to compete in Group B. The above category was suspended because of the terrible accidents that ended the lives of renowned drivers. Those cars had spectacularly competitive performances applied to open roads on ever-changing terrain and much more dangerous than the stable and controlled conditions of a racetrack.
Between 1984 and 1986 272 units of the 288 GTO model were produced, knowing that it would not compete, but with the aim of facing its most imposing German rival, the Porsche 959, which ran only 2 races for Group B.
Ferrari took advantage of this limited edition to demonstrate its full potential and the ability of its engineers. The 288 GTO had a cabin with Kevlar panels with aluminum honeycomb core and other panels with materials such as fiberglass and Nomex. The panels separating the engine compartment from the passenger compartment were also manufactured in Nomex.
Carbon fiber abounded because of its very high structural rigidity at very low weight. In the construction of the hood, the cover cover engine and the roof was used a compound with Nomex, while for the panels of the doors was opted for fiberglass.
In 2004 Sports Car International placed in its list of the best sports cars of the 1980s in 2nd place the Ferrari 288 GTO, behind the unbeatable Porsche 959.
The 288 was designed by Pininfarina. Inside everything maintained the criterion of maximum performance car, although it presented some comfort elements such as air conditioner and audio equipment. The board was covered in specially selected suede and treated to avoid glare on the windshield. The instruments had Veglia brand elements. The Momo steering wheel had a leather-coated rim and the seats were typical of a super sports car, with a wrap-around shape and also covered in leather.
