The new Subaru Impreza was presented at the 2007 New York Motor Show. The main novelty is that it will be offered in two versions: the traditional tricuerpo and a five-door bicuerpo. The new Impreza has three engines, two nafteros and a diesel boxer.
After a long wait, the company Subaru revealed the new generation of Impreza, one of the brand's flagship products. For the first time since its initial launch, a five-door bicuerpo version will also be available, in addition to the usual three-volume version. The tricuerpo version is slightly larger than its predecessor, while its aesthetic appearance has changed noticeably.
Always associated with the Rally car, the Subaru Impreza always stood out for being a high-performance sedan and sporty design. This new design has somewhat left aside that aesthetic feature in certain body details, although it does maintain sport elements such as a tiny rear spoiler and a generous air intake in the hood of the Turbo tricuerpo.
Inside there are no big changes, keeping a well equipped board with sport design tending to traditional. The equipment features six airbags, central display on the console and exclusive instruments with central tachometer in the WRX version.
The Subaru Impreza has three engines, two naphthers and one diesel engine. For the first time a diesel engine with boxer design will be offered on the market, characterized by the fact that its cylinders are facing 180º. This 4 boxer cylinders of 2,000 cm3 engine is supercharged with a turbo and includes the common rail system, developing a power of 180 hp. The diesel version targets the European market.
In the meantime, the nafteros engines are 4 cylinders in line of 2.500 cm3. The first option has single camshaft (SOHC) and a power of 173 hp. The second version, which will equip the WRX model, adds to the same base a turbocharger and double overhead camshaft (DOHC) to reach 230 hp. This latest engine will also be available with more power to equip the Impreza WRX STI, with 300 horsepower.
The 173 hp engine will feature a four-speed automatic gearbox, while for the other engines options include 5-speed and 6-speed manual gearboxes. In all cases, the Impreza remains true to its custom using permanent all-wheel drive and stability control system.
The traction, as usual in the firm, is permanent on all four wheels and the transmission is manual with five or six speeds (depending on the propeller to which it is joined) or a four-speed automatic in the case of being associated with the less powerful engine.
The tricuerpo body is now 4.460 mm long (50 mm greater than the previous one) and has a wheelbase of 2.620 mm (100 mm greater). The wheelbase is the same for both bicuerpo and tricuerpo versions.
The new Subaru Impreza will be available for sale on the European market after mid-2007.
