Toyota Prius - Hybrid Synergy Drive

Toyota Prius
The Toyota Prius is a symbol of technology and environmental responsibility. Equipped with the latest generation hybrid engine technology (Hybrid Synergy Drive), it uses a naphthous engine and an electric motor providing a lower amount of gas emissions and achieving fuel economy with the highest handling performance.

The CVT (Continuously Variable Electronic) automatic transmission system allows smooth ride without the driver feeling the gear changes typical of a conventional automatic transmission.

This technology is not a vision of the future, but a reality already applied. More than 300,000 Prius have been sold worldwide. Toyota continues to develop this hybrid technology. Let us remember that this company pioneered the serial production of hybrid vehicles. The Toyota Prius also received the award for Best Vehicle of the Year 2004 in the USA and the Best Vehicle of the Year 2005 in Europe, the latter awarded by the EURO NCAP.

How the Hybrid Synergy Drive System works

Initial Acceleration

During initial acceleration and at low revs, it uses battery power to move the vehicle. When the power level is low, use the fuel engine to power the generator and recharge the battery.

Normal Conditions

When driving under normal conditions, the fuel engine is the main source of energy, transmitting its power directly to the wheels, as well as to the generator, which produces electricity, so that the electric motor can also propel the same. The Hybrid Synergy Drive always maintains the optimal ratio between the power of both engines.

Total Acceleration

When overtaking or accelerating, all three sources are combined to provide maximum power: the high-voltage battery, generator and fuel engine. The electronic throttle along with the E-CVT provide smooth, linear acceleration.

Deceleration

When braking, the electric motor controls the power distribution to the wheels. This allows the engine to act as a large generator, recovering energy and storing it in the high-voltage battery.

Detention

When the vehicle is stationary but with the engine running, the fuel engine goes off to conserve fuel.

Opinion

Driving pleasure: the Prius provides effective power with excellent acceleration performance and smooth, controlled driving thanks to the 1.500 cm3 16V VVT-i engine.

Consumption: High aerodynamic efficiency combined with Hybrid Synergy Drive reduces fuel consumption dramatically. The Prius travels 800 km with a tank load, indicating that it consumes almost 40 percent less than a conventional fuel engine.

Safety: has a dual “SRS” (Supplemental Restraint System) airbag for driver and passenger. Seat belts have pretensioner and force limiter.
