The General Motors division, Chevrolet, introduced the Camaro in 1967, in response to Ford Mustang's bestseller. The Camaro represented everything Chevrolet fans expected: a thoroughbred race. The model named Z-28, had a V8 engine 4.900 cm3 of 290 HP and a compression radius of 10 to 1. The version of competition used the same V8, which without having to comply with environmental laws, developed a power of 390 HP. Camaro competed in the SCCA (Sport Car Club of America) races.

In order to be admitted by SCCA, it had to include certain options, such as the sports equipment required for Group 2. This equipment included: + sports springs and shock absorbers on all four wheels + Special Tires + mechanically driven botavalves + Holley 4-Hole Carburetor + modified intake manifold made of aluminium + 2 inch intake valves and 1.6 inch exhaust valves + double point ignition + Torsion Bar + optional escapes and + body painted with the bands typical of USA racing cars

Other options offered were 15-inch diameter magnesium rims, rear spoiler, and various gearbox tuning, from spokes 3.07 to 4.88.

The Z-28 with the Holley 4-bit carburetor accelerated from 0 to 100 km/h in 6.7 seconds; traveled the quarter mile in 14.9 seconds and reached a top speed of 200 km/h.

A few months later, the Camaro received as an optional 6,500 cm3 “L-78” engine reaching 375 HP.
