The first Mustang entered the American market at the end of 1964. In a short time it became the best-selling new car in Ford history.
The first restyling arrived in 1967, with the Fastback model. Its sporty lines helped to battle new rivals: the Chevrolet Camaro and the Pontiac Firebird , both presented in 1967.
The revamped mustang had a 4.700 cm3 small block V8 engine that reached 6,000 rpm. The power reached 271 HP, 19 less than the Camaro. This V8 of the Mustang was popularly known as “Hi-Po”. It had chrome valve caps and chrome air filter.
The GT Fastback had a good ride, thanks to the addition of sports shock absorbers and larger stabilizer bars.
The body was named Fastback, because the tail drop was a continuous line from the roof to the end of the trunk lid. It was what is commonly called 2 + 2, that is, it has two seats in front and two small seats behind, to transport two more people on short trips.
On the outside were emblems with the GT legend and side bands. Other ornaments of the Mustang were the side air intakes, the chrome fuel tank cap, and the chrome exhaust pipe nozzles.
