Engineer Reeves Callaway is the prestigious specialist car preparer who introduced the first Corvette modified for street use. His first modified vehicle was a 1986 Corvette equipped with two twin turbos. Callaway's work was serious enough to receive official support from Chevrolet. Even the Corvette turbo could be ordered to Callaway from any General Motors dealership.
The first Corvette Callaway added two 10 psi turbos to the standard L-98 engine. The Corvette reached a power of 382 hp and a speed of 300 km/h, then presented as optional new body panels that improved its aerodynamics and increased its speed to 309 km/h.
Callaway later decided to manufacture a couple of special prototypes to demonstrate the spectacular potential of the Corvette. First, the Corvette Top Gun was introduced, a specimen with an improved engine reaching 379 km/h, but there was still much more to see.
The most technologically developed prototype by the American preparer was the Corvette Callaway Sledgehammer. The Sledgehammer was more modified than any other Callaway creation. The V8 Bi-Turbo developed 880 hp power at just 6,250 rpm and allowed the Corvette to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 3.9 seconds.
All the Sledgehammer panels were redesigned and the body had new air intakes and exits on the front and sides of the vehicle. The $400,000 Corvette Sledgehammer impacted the world by registering a top speed of 410 km/h. Perhaps the most surprising thing is that the same car that reaches 410 kilometers has a very serene ride in everyday use and is transformed by demand.
