The Detroit Motor Show, to be held in January 2006, will be the venue for the presentation of the new BMW Z4 M. The small Z4 will inherit the in-line 6-cylinder engine currently used in the BMW M3. Since the body restyling is very light, the highlight is placed under the hood.
The Z4 M does not replace the standard Z4, but is one more option. The body design, somewhat in time, does not help too much to highlight the remarkable performance improvement achieved in the Z4 M. Some details are highlighted such as the four exhaust outlets and the 5-spoke double rims.
The front spoiler features larger air intakes, the hood was slightly redesigned in its ribs, and the rest of the car remains almost the same as the standard model. BMW will offer the renovated Z4 in eight colors, three of which will be exclusive to the M versions.
The Z4 M will use a six-speed manual transmission. It will use an M differential to optimize dynamism. Continuing with the necessary improvements, BMW provided the Z4 with a more evolved steering system, while suspensions are more effective in compensating for the dramatic increase in performance.
It was also necessary to build new tires, in this case run-flat, to which is added an evolved brake system already used in the BMW M3 CSL.
It seems that the 230 horsepower of the previous Z4 were not enough to compete with rivals like the Porsche Boxster S (almost 280 HP), the Nissan 350 Z (also close to 280 HP), the Mercedes SLK 350 (270 HP) and the Mercedes SLK 55 AMG (almost 360 HP). The M version of the Z4 reaches 340 HP, so it is expected to compete directly for the top step of the segment against the Mercedes SLK 55 AMG.
Of all the available motorization versions of the Z4, the most powerful will be the M with a 3,200 cm3 in-line engine. The 2006 BMW Z4 M will deliver 340 HP of power at 7,900 rpm and a maximum torque of 365 Nm at 4,900 rpm. This allows you to achieve acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h in just 5 seconds.
All versions of the Z4 will be able to have optional M-kit, such as sports seats, refitted suspension and 18-inch diameter wheels.
