The Ford Sierra Standard debuted on the market in 1982. Its lines were modern and quite dynamic, considering that in the early 80s most cars were extremely square in general appearance. Despite its different style, it was quickly accepted by the consumer public. In 1983 the company Cosworth accepted a mission to develop a high-performance Sierra, with British Tourism careers as the ultimate goal.
Keeping the basic characteristics of the original suspensions of the Ford Sierra, Cosworth modified the engine, aerodynamics and, consequently, details of the exterior appearance. The engine first received a lightweight alloy cap for 16 valves. Subsequently, and by Ford's decision, a Garret turbocharger was incorporated, which significantly improved the performance of the 4-cylinder impeller.
The aerodynamics of the Ford Sierra required adaptations for the new performance. Then, elements were added to improve stability, such as the huge rear spoiler and air deflectors located in front and back. The hood was equipped with vents for better air circulation as well as the bumpers incorporated additional sockets.
In 1986 the first Ford Sierra Cosworth competition debuted, which in 1987 were officially presented and approved according to the competition regulations. In 1987 the Sierra won 8 races out of 11 in the European Tourism Championship. Once again the union between Ford and Cosworth proved very successful.
