The Ferrari 250 S appeared in 1952 to replace the almost “experimental” model 225 S. The 225 was an intermediate stage of development between the successful Ferrari_212_Export and this 250 S.
The first of the Ferrari 250 was the S Berlinetta prototype that took part in the 1952 “Mille Miglia” competition. To drive the brand new 250 S Ferrari appointed as drivers Giovanni Bracco and Alfonso Rolfo.
During the race you could see how the Mercedes Benz took a good advantage on the straight lines, while the Ferrari 250 S made important differences in mixed areas and climbs.
Finally the agility of the Ferrari 250 S prevailed over the powerful German cars. The driver Giovanni Bracco won the victory in the 1952 Mille Miglia, the first victory of a Ferrari 250.
Ferrari continued the development of the 250 S in other endurance races such as the 24 Hours of Le Mans and the always remembered “Carrera Panamericana” in Mexico.
The 250 used a tubular chassis with a wheelbase of 2,250 mm. This short distance gave it good maneuverability and cornering stability.
The engine remained the usual V12 of contemporary Ferrari, but with a displacement of 2,953 cm3. Its three Weber 36 DCF carburetors completed the combo that delivered 230 horsepower, well utilized thanks to independent suspensions on all four wheels.
Top speed: 217 km/h
Length: 4.318 mm
