The second Ferrari Berlinetta Boxer was introduced in 1973 as a replacement for the 365 GTB/4 Daytona. By 1976 the Italian house had already prepared its relay in order to compete with its rival Lamborghini, thus the optimised Ferrari 512 BBemerged.

The Ferrari 512 BB was presented in late 1976 at the Paris Motor Show. It is an improved version of the previous Berlinetta Boxer. The rapid development and introduction of this optimized model was a decision that responded to market competition. Ferrari's direct rival was presenting the spectacular Lamborghini Countach LP400 S, a really well done sports car.

From the outside, the 512 BB differed from the first Berlinetta Boxer by minor details such as the front grid and the small spoiler, the NACA air intake on the side and the rear lights. The changes mainly responded to a need for differentiation, not to technical requirements.

Other modifications were evident in the new rear-view mirrors and in the housing for the four exhaust outlets, which were six in the previous model. The cabin was not redesigned but better conditioned, simply relocating part of the instrument.

The Ferrari 512 BB stood out for being a much more maneuverable car than its predecessor, despite having a higher torque engine. The engine evolved by elevating the dynamic performance of the car. As an adaptation, the length of the rear track and other minor details were increased.

The 12-cylinder Boxer engine had an increase in displacement, from 4,390 cm3 to 4,942 cm3. Another important change was dry crankcase lubrication. Interestingly, despite increasing the displacement and compression ratio (9.2 to 1), the power was reduced by 20 horses. However, the performance of 512 BB was not severely affected.

The maximum power of 340 hp reached 700 rpm less than the previous engine. The feed still used four three-bit carburetors Weber 40 IF3 C. Fuel injection would arrive at 512i BB in 1981.

With 340 hp, the Ferrari 512 BB accelerated from 0 to 100 km/h in 5.6 seconds and reached a top speed of 270 km/h, very good despite its 1,400 kg. The evolution of the car was not only appreciated in its performance, but also in improvements in maneuverability in all types of conditions of use, becoming a docile car in urban use and a pure blood when you demand him.

Finally, the production of 929 copies ended in 1981, when this car was replaced by the Ferrari 512i BB.
