The Ferrari 512 TR was introduced in 1991 as a replacement for the Testarossa that appeared in 1984. This modified car achieved better performance and looked small aesthetic changes in front and back details in order to look more modern.

The engine had a few modifications that optimized its performance. To begin with, the air intake system and electronic management were replaced with a new Bosch brand system. The compression ratio was brought to 10. 1:1, new pistons and larger intake valves were used. Even the exhaust system was revised and partially modified.

All these changes allowed the impeller to achieve better performance, especially due to increased torque over a wide range of revolutions. The benefit is evident in the acceleration with a stopped start, as the 512 TR accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 4.8 seconds, a second faster than Testarossa. The top speed also increased, now reaching 309 km/h.

Other elements were also modified to obtain a better balance. The Ferrari Testarossa was always criticized for its driver-friendly gearbox. In this model that improved a lot. With the new single disc clutch and changing the angle of the drive rod the 512 TR changed favorably.

The brake system varied and its responsiveness improved, especially on the front train. The suspensions were readjusted with new parameters and in combination with low-profile tires, maneuverability was another markedly improved point.

In the design of the car, Pininfarina sought to update the body by retouching details such as the position lights, the grill and the engine cover. Inside, work was done to harmonize with external changes. Basically, the location of the controls of the climate control system was changed and the center console was kept separate from the dashboard.

Production of the Ferrari 512 TR took place between 1991 and 1993. It was subsequently replaced by the Ferrari 512 M, the last Ferrari with Boxer engine.
