Giugiaro decided to celebrate his 50 years in the automotive design in a very special way: designing and building his own custom Ferrari.
The Bridgestone Center in Tokyo is the setting for the presentation of the car designed as a birthday gift. Italdesign and Bridgestone presented the Ferrari designed by Giorgetto Giugiaro which was called GG50.
This toy by the Italian designer is based on a Ferrari 612 Scaglietti, one of the most modern creations of Ferrari. The Ferrari GG50 will be presented at the Tokyo Show 2005 and will be located as the main attraction of the Bridgestone booth.
Italian designer Giugiaro commented that he created this Ferrari to enjoy with his family. The process began when Giugiaro expressed his willingness to design his own Ferrari to Fiat Group President Luca de Montezemolo. He told him what would be the car to be redesigned: the Ferrari 612 Scaglietti, created by the rival studio Pininfarina, the main designer of Ferrari. The goal, well accomplished, was to make the car look compact and quickly recognized as another Ferrari.
The Ferrari GG50 is 9 cm. shorter than the 612 and its appearance is intended to be even smaller, due to the defined cuts and the design of the passenger cabin. The hatchback style end of the car increases the sense of shrinking dimensions. But distinctive features of the brand such as the front grid, the small fog lights and the extended hood maintain the legacy of the traditional cars of the Italian house of the late Enzo.
Xenon headlights have a design cut very similar to those of the concept Pininfarina Rossa, exhibited in 2000. While the taillights, powered by LED technology, are the classic twin circles at each end of the rear panel. Continuing at the rear of the vehicle, Italdesign replaced the original Scaglietti naphtha tank with a 95 litre capacity, located horizontally in the lower part of the GG50. This allows rebutting the rear seats to increase the load capacity of this sports car 2 + 2, which has a maximum load volume of 500 litres.
The interior is where the most differences are distinguished between the GG50 and the Scaglietti 612. The main attraction of the center console is a display corresponding to the satellite navigation system.
Surprisingly, the shift lever on the traditional polished aluminum grille is gone. This is because Giugiaro replaced that traditional system with the innovative sequential gearbox system driven by behind the wheel cams. Everything is covered in leather, although there are few details in beech wood. They are located in the door panels and in the glove compartment.
The center console is still in place, with storage compartments for the front and rear seats. Perhaps the most interesting thing is the roof of the GG50. Italdesign replaced the conventional hard metal roof with a photochromic glass, which wisely maintains design continuity with the front windshield.
As far as the engine is concerned, the GG50 maintains the original driver of the Ferrari 612. This is a 5.700 cm3 front-center V12 engine that generates 540 horses at 7.250 rpm, the GG50 is also rear wheel drive and fits 20 inch chrome wheels produced by ATP Performing.
The Scaglietti weighs 1,840 kilos and, although there are no reported data, a similar weight is estimated for the GG50, so the performance should also be very similar. The Ferrari 612 Scaglietti has a top speed of 315 km/h and accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 4.2 seconds.
