The Mosler MT900 is one of the best super sports cars ever made in the USA. It combines technology used in Formula 1 with a V8 engine derived from the Chevrolet Corvette. The Mosler is manufactured in street versions such as the MT900 S and in racing versions such as the MT900 GTR.
The Mosler MT900 S is the street version (the S comes from Street). It was produced in small quantities since 2002, mainly to comply with the approval requirements. Its main feature is the monocoque chassis made of carbon fiber, designed with criteria used in the aeronautical industry.
The manufacturer, Mosler Automotive, proudly announced that the car passed federal legal standards for fumes and crash testing in the US, including the strict CARB (California Air Resources Board) certification that makes it a completely legal car to market in that country. It also complies with all equivalent UK regulations.
With carbon fiber monocoque structure combined with aluminum honeycomb ensures high structural rigidity and a remarkable impact safety margin while maintaining a very low weight.
In turn, the chassis has two chromium molybdenum steel substructures. The smaller one is located in the front and houses the suspension assembly plus the steering system. The second substructure is more complex and is located in the center of the car behind the passenger compartment. The rear suspensions, engine and transmission are installed there.
This model was initially offered with a Corvette V8 LS6 engine of 5,700 cm3 displacement and a power of 425 hp. Although the customer could opt for a version equipped with turbocharger that delivered more power, now 600 hp. The gearbox used is the same as available on the Porsche GT3 R.
The key to the performance of the car is its high power and low weight of just 1,111 kg. Even the version called Mosler Photon weighed less: just 900 kg. Thus, the 600 hp Mosler MT900 S turbo accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 3.1 seconds and reaches a top speed of 306 km/h.
For the street Mosler to be a relatively simple maintenance car, it was equipped with standard Corvette brakes and other readily available auto parts on the market. While in Europe, Mosler himself was equipped with another more powerful brake system and also more common in that market.
