General Motors CEO Rick Wagoner announced the manufacture of a new Camaro for 2008. The new Chevrolet Camaro will be available to fans on the market from 2009 year.
This new Camaro will be practically the same as the Camaro Concept 2006 presented at the Detroit show.
The audience's response to the appearance of Camaro Concept at the North American International Auto Show was more than unexpected, it was something between too much and unprecedented. Even some people sent certified checks hoping to get the first copies to be produced, even before production was spoken...
That is why General Motors decided not to delay the evaluation any longer and to make the decision soon to manufacture a new Chevrolet Camaro.
Rick Wagoner commented that this reaction from consumers reminds him of “the unique and iconic meaning that Chevrolet products can have in the hearts of customers.” He also added that “The Camaro is much more than a car, symbolizes the American spirit and his passion for cars.”
This new generation in the history of Camaro will begin to be manufactured at the end of 2008 in order to be available at the beginning of 2009. The new Chevrolet Camaro will be offered with optional V6 and V8 engines with manual and automatic gearbox drives.
One of the V8 engines it would adopt would be the LS2 of 6,000 cm3 displacement and 400 hp power. Like the Concept, it would have a manual 6-speed gearbox and a strong chassis with independent suspensions on all 4 wheels.
General Motors Vice President of Design Ed Welburn explained that design is a modern interpretation of the classic 1969 Camaro design. That model is considered one of the best Camaro designs of all time. Ed Welburn himself owns a 1969 Camaro SS.
Ed Peper (general manager of Chevrolet) commented that this new Camaro tries to attract those who met the first Camaros in its time, nostalgic fans and young people who discover these modern cars but with a lot of history on their backs.
In General Motors they consider the interesting thing about this Camaro is that it is a complete car, because it has the design of a super sports car combined with the expected performance while still being a car for everyday use. It is even a good choice because it competes in performance with European sports cars despite being considerably cheaper.
The team of designers was in line with the desired market segment - young people. The age of designers is between 27 and 35 years old, being of different nationalities. They all expressed having had some experience or feeling towards Camaro and other American sports cars in their first approaches to the enthusiasm for car design.
The achieved design redefines the Camaro both for new enthusiasts and for fans of years ago. This redefinition successfully embraces design objectives along with the inclusion of new technologies.
The general manager of Chevrolet emphasized the fact that this Camaro completes the acclaimed range of high-performance vehicles, called SS by Super Sport, which tops the Chevrolet Corvette C6 Corvette.
