November 2006
Peugeot put an end to the suspense and unveiled photos of its brand-new SUV, the Peugeot 4007. This off-road vehicle is the result of the agreement between the PSA Group and the Asian company Mitsubishi. The purpose of this agreement is to jointly develop off-road vehicles. It will be marketed in Europe from 2007.
The new Peugeot 4007 SUV will share platform, body elements and engines with its peers: the Citroën C-Crosser and the Mitsubishi Outlander. The joint development is based on the Mitsubishi Outlander, which is currently in its second degree of evolution. Engine options include naphtholder and diesel versions.
Peugeot and Citroën delayed their entry into the SUV (Sport Utility Vehicle) market. And they lost a lot of ground especially in Europe, where models such as Mercedes M-Class, Audi Q7, Volkswagen Touareg and other products such as Toyota and Honda SUVs are already well established and are approved by the users.
The aesthetic aspect of the Peugeot 4007 SUV is that of a compact but rather inflated van, especially in its front section. The back is somewhat more demure, with moderate size red headlights. The tailgate has been divided into two parts so that its opening is mixed, that is, one part upwards and the other downwards.
The front stands out some lights projected backwards with similarities to those of its other current products such as the Peugeot 407, although somewhat more crude in this case. Another family trait but exaggerated almost to ridicule is the huge grill mouth. It's really so big and it looks so rough that it looks almost rude. At this point, the design of the Citroën C-Crosser is much superior.
The overall volume is quite square, with little dynamism and it could be concluded that its appearance is more associated with a large urban vehicle than with an SUV for the field or crossings.
As far as the inside is concerned, the truth is that little is known to date. It could be likely that Peugeot will adopt the design proposal used in the Mitsubishi Outlander Concept, consisting of seven seats in three rows, being the last rebuttable to expand the load capacity.
From the photographs and the little information that Peugeot has disclosed, the dimensions of the Peugeot and Citroën SUVs will be similar to those of the Mitsubishi Outlander Concept, which is 4,600 mm long and a width of 1,800 mm.
The Peugeot 4007 SUV will feature diesel and naphthous engines. Diesel impellers will be those manufactured by PSA. The first is a 4 cylinders of 2,000 cm3 and 136 hp, while the other is the same 2,200 cm3 of 170 hp that currently equips the Peugeot 407. The naphthous engine is a 4-cylinder engine of 2,400 cm3 of engine and 170 hp manufactured by Mitsubishi.
The Peugeot 4007 will also have three traction operation options: a simple, a permanent integral and a manual drive integral via a switch on the on-board instrument.
