The German company Audi is preparing its response to the success achieved by the Mini Cooper. To this end, it is developing the so-called A1, a small vehicle based on the Volkswgen Golf platform.
The Audi A1 shall be equipped with naphthous and diesel engines, FSI and TDI respectively. It has already been announced that the official presentation will take effect at the 2009 Frankfurt Motor Show.
Audi will start selling the A1 in 2010, a few months after its presentation at the 2009 Frankfurt Motor Show. Part of the development process is to achieve a price not exceeding €20,000, although it is optimistic that it could be between €16,000 and €18,000.
It was also anticipated that Audi would prepare a version called S1, with high performance sports and additional comfort options. However, they claim that this version would still be, in the final price, below rival Mini Cooper.
The S1 version would be equipped with a high-performance TFSI engine, although it would not include all-wheel drive to avoid excessive price increases.
While the standard versions would feature Nafteros FSI engines of 1,400 cm3 of 90 hp and 1,600 cm3 of 115 hp. The optional diesel will be a turbo TDI of 1,900 cm3 displacement and 105 hp power. No information was disclosed on possible gearboxes or transmission systems.
As far as design is concerned, the future A1 would be very stylized but provocative in the front sector, with lines flowing backwards rounding the overall image of the vehicle. The small size of this car will be one of the determining factors in the design process. This factor not only narrowed the exterior but also the interior, from styling to habitability.
The A1 would be presented in coupe format, although later a convertible version would be included in the range. The illustrations show a small car with current features present in the rest of the Audi range, although it is believed that it will incorporate aesthetic features previously practiced in the concept car Shooting Brake.
